Breakdown

Cover 4 Palms is a zone shell out of the Dime Single Mug set, showing four deep quarter defenders bending outside underneath the vertical releases from the boundary receivers, with two flat defenders (the X marks) sitting underneath to wall off quick outs and cross routes. The middle linebacker (olive) sits in a shallow zone drop while the four defensive linemen rush upfield off the line. This is a zone beater against the run and a strong shell against sideline reads, since it reads pattern match rules on the two outside verticals, then rotates the corner into a squat on any out breaking route while the safety plays over the top. Primary read progression for the defense is outside receiver number two on both sides first, since the flat defender and deep quarter defender are combining to jump any speed out or smash route before working back to the inside vertical threats.

Defensive Reads

Key the number two receiver's release off the line: if he pushes vertical past ten yards, the flat defender should sink and the deep quarter defender stays over the top in his zone drop. Watch for the quick out or speed out from the slot, since the flat defender is coached to jump that route immediately in the Palms concept. This shell is vulnerable to double moves and deep crossers that attack the seam between the deep quarter defender and the middle linebacker, so user that middle defender to help close throwing lanes over the middle. Against four verticals, get depth immediately with your deep quarter defenders and do not let them bite on any hitch or comeback from the outside receiver. If the offense runs empty or spreads to trips, respect the leverage of the flat defender since Palms rules are built to combo the number one and number two receivers, but a natural running back release into the flat can create a soft spot underneath.

Usage Tips

Call this out of Dime personnel when you expect 11 or 12 personnel spread sets, since the extra defensive back gives you numbers against trips and slot heavy formations.

Pre-snap, check the safety depth: if both safeties are showing two high at 10-12 yards, this Cover 4 Palms look is already disguised and you can sit back with confidence against play action.

Use the flat defenders to squeeze any quick game or speed out from the number two receiver, then trust the deep quarter defender to carry the vertical release if the receiver breaks upfield.

This play pairs well with Cover 1 Hole or Cover 2 Man in the same set, since you can show a similar pre-snap shell before rotating into different coverage rules and keep the quarterback guessing between single high and quarters looks.

Best used on second and long or third and medium situations where the offense is likely to attack the flat or run a deep out, since Palms rules are built to jump exactly those routes.
