Breakdown

Will Go Fire 3 is a Cover 3 zone blitz out of the 4-3 Under front that sends five rushers while dropping the remaining defenders into a three deep, three under shell. Both outside linebackers run vertical go routes off the snap to hold the deep thirds, the strongside corner works a deep out breaking route to the boundary, and the underneath zone defenders spill flat and hook responsibilities under the blitz. This is a zone blitz designed to disguise pressure and force a quick, inaccurate throw rather than a static coverage look, so the primary read for the defense is getting the fire zone timing right so the underneath zones fill before the quarterback can find the middle voids.

Defensive Reads

Watch the running back and tight end releases immediately after the snap, since they are the first hot reads against the five man pressure and will expose the shallow void if your underneath defenders drop late. Key the offensive tackles at the snap, if they turn to pick up the edge rushers instead of blocking down, expect the play to develop toward a quick game or slide protection built to beat pressure. This call is vulnerable to hard play-action rollouts and screens away from the blitz side, so if the offense shows run action toward the weak side, be ready to squeeze down with the underneath defenders. It shuts down deep out breaking and comeback routes to the blitz side corner and forces checkdowns, but it can be exposed by quick slants and stick routes into the vacated middle hook zone before the linebackers settle. Post-snap, track the quarterback's eyes toward the deep thirds first, since the go routes are designed to hold your deep defenders, then flash your eyes back underneath to close on any hesitation throw into the flat or seam.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect the offense to take a shot deep, since the go routes from the outside linebackers bait aggressive quarterbacks into throwing into the deep thirds.

Pre-snap, check for empty or spread formations that isolate your linebackers in space, and consider checking to a two high shell if the offense shows four verticals.

User the strongside corner on the deep out breaking route to jump underneath comeback and curl combinations, since that route is your best man to sit on intermediate throws.

Disguise the blitz by showing a standard 4-3 Under shell before the snap, then bring the fire zone pressure late to keep the quarterback's eyes off the underneath rotation.

Pair this call with Cover 3 Hard Flat or Cover 3 Match on back to back snaps so quarterbacks cannot key on the same post-snap rotation and get comfortable diagnosing the blitz.
