Breakdown

Cover 1 FS Fire out of the 4-3 Under Base personnel is a man blitz built to bring the free safety off the hash on a fire zone blitz while leaving five defenders in press man coverage underneath and a single deep defender over the top. The diagram shows four defenders converging downhill on blitz paths at the snap, with the deep defender bracketing the middle of the field and the remaining corners and linebacker locked in man technique on the outside and slot receivers. This is a pressure package designed to beat man beating route combos and quick game by collapsing the pocket before timing routes develop, forcing the quarterback into a rushed decision against tight man coverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch the quarterback's eyes immediately after the snap since the free safety blitz forces a one read progression and quick throws are the offense's only answer. Pre snap, identify if the offense is in a two back or empty set, extra blockers can pick up the blitz and turn this into a coverage bust if your man defenders lose their assignments. Key the slot receiver's release, if he wins inside quickly against your man corner that is the first place quarterbacks look to beat this blitz. Post snap, feel for crossing routes and drag concepts since they are the primary counter to man coverage blitzes and can exploit the vacated middle of the field. This look is vulnerable to hot route sluggo or slant and go combos that attack the man corner in isolation, so user the corner if you see a deep shot developing.

Usage Tips

Call this on third and short to medium when you expect the offense to sit in quick game or empty protection since the free safety blitz closes throwing lanes fast.

Check the running back and tight end alignment pre snap, if both are staying in to block you have a numbers advantage on the blitz and should send it with confidence.

Use defensive audibles to adjust the deep defender's landmark if you see stack or bunch formations that could pull your lone deep defender out of position.

Pair this with Cover 1 Hole or Cover 1 Robber Press in the same set so the offense cannot key blitz versus coverage based on your pre snap defender depth.

Avoid calling this against heavy play action shotgun sets since the extra rusher can be neutralized by a hot back staying in to chip, leaving your man corners exposed on deep shots.
