Tampa 2 out of the Under 4-3 Base personnel is the signature zone coverage call that stretches the field vertically by walling off the deep middle. The Mike backer carries a deep hole drop down the middle of the field, splitting the difference between the two deep safeties who bracket the numbers, while the corners sink into deep quarter-to-third zones underneath and the Sam and Will drop into the flats and hook/curl zones. This is a zone beater designed to shut down four verticals and deep crossers, and the primary read progression for the defense is to key the quarterback's eyes first, then process the Mike's ability to carry any seam route or tight end split into the middle void before passing off to the deep safeties.
Pre-snap, check safety depth: if both safeties are deep and the corners are playing off with outside leverage, you are likely getting this same Tampa 2 shell or a Cover 2 variant. Post-snap, key the Mike linebacker's drop, if he is sprinting straight up the seam that confirms Tampa 2 rather than standard Cover 2, which tells the quarterback the deep middle is temporarily vacated underneath his drop. This coverage is vulnerable to quick slants and shallow crosses attacking the area the Mike vacates as he retreats deep, and it struggles against staggered vertical routes that flood one deep quarter faster than the safety can rotate over. It beats four verticals, dig routes over the middle, and deep post combinations since the Mike and both safeties combine to take away the deep middle third. Watch for user-controlled defenders sitting the Mike in a shallow zone instead of running his deep drop, which signals a disguised look and opens up the intermediate seam or deep post if you diagnose it fast enough before the safeties can help.
Call this on obvious passing downs like second and long or third and medium when you expect the offense to attack vertically off play action or four verticals concepts.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running trips or bunch formations that can flood one side and overload your flat defenders, and consider shifting the Sam or Will with a pre-snap adjustment to match numbers.
User the Mike linebacker in his deep hole drop to rob the seam route or deep dig since that void between the safeties is the biggest weakness of this coverage against a good route runner.
Mix this in with Cover 3 Seam Press and Cover 4 Quarters from the same set so the offense cannot key on safety depth or corner leverage pre-snap and start guessing your coverage shell.
Avoid calling this against heavy run personnel or against offenses that consistently attack the flats quickly, since the underneath curl-flat defenders can be stressed by quick outs and speed options before the zone fully develops.
