Breakdown

Cover 1 Hole Press is a man coverage shell out of the Under 4-3 front that puts press man on the outside receivers with a deep free safety sitting over the top in the middle of the field. The four defenders shown with red arrows blitz downhill or drop into underlying run support, while the hole defender (the robber) sits underneath at intermediate depth to rob crossing routes and in-cuts. This is a man beater killer designed to erase quick game and shallow crosses, with the primary read being the underneath robber first to eliminate any drag or dig, then the deep half of the field where the single high safety cleans up any vertical shot.

Defensive Reads

Watch the offensive formation for bunch or stack looks that try to rub off the press corners, this is the primary counter to this coverage. If the quarterback stares down the middle of the field, use the hole defender to jump any in-cut, drag, or slant since that defender sits underneath specifically to take that away. Post-snap, key the tight end or slot receiver on option routes, since the single high safety cannot help on both seams at once. This coverage is vulnerable to deep double moves and corner routes against press man, so monitor cornerback footwork and depth to make sure they mirror rather than get caught peeking. Beware four verticals concepts and seam routes attacking the middle void created by man coverage with only one deep defender, rotate awareness to the free safety's leverage before the snap.

Usage Tips

Check the pre-snap alignment for a single high safety and press corners outside, that is your tell for Cover 1 Hole Press or a similar man look.

Use the hole defender to jump any shallow drag, spot route, or slant that offenses lean on against man coverage, this is the play's biggest strength.

Pair this call with Free Fire or Sam Blitz 2 in your play-calling sequence to disguise pressure looks while still keeping a man shell underneath.

Best used on early downs or third and medium when you expect quick game, RPOs, or option routes since the robber neutralizes the easy completion.

Bark out man coverage adjustments pre-snap if you see stack or bunch formations, and consider audibling the press corner off an elite deep threat to avoid a blown assignment.
