Cover 1 Hole is a man coverage defensive play out of the Under 4-3 Base personnel. The diagram shows four down linemen rushing the passer with arrows crashing upfield, a linebacker (the "Hole" defender) sitting underneath in the middle of the field as a robber to jump any crossing routes or in-cuts, and a deep safety rotating over the top in single-high coverage while the remaining defenders lock up in man across the formation. This is a man beater killer designed to take away option routes and crossers over the middle, with the primary read progression starting at the deep middle safety to confirm single-high shell before working down to the underneath hole defender who reads the quarterback's eyes and jumps the first in-breaking route he sees.
Pre-snap, check safety alignment: a single deep safety in the middle of the field confirms the Cover 1 shell shown in the diagram, so bail your safety deep immediately at the snap. Watch for the quarterback attacking the flats or throwing quick hitches to the boundary since the Hole defender leaves the flat vacated when he sits inside. Post-snap, key the quarterback's eyes with the Hole defender since his job is to rob any in-cut, drag, or slant that crosses his zone before man defenders can catch up. This coverage gets beaten by well timed rub routes and pick concepts at the line since man defenders can get picked off jamming through traffic with no zone help underneath. Watch out for max protect play-action rollouts since the four man rush shown in the diagram gives no extra pressure, so if the quarterback gets outside the pocket the coverage can bust with defenders chasing in man.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running four verticals or heavy crossing concepts since the Hole defender is specifically designed to rob those in-breaking routes and shallow crosses.
Use this play on early downs against offenses that lean on drag routes, dig routes, or option routes from the slot since the underneath robber technique eliminates those easy completions.
Manually control the Hole linebacker after the snap so you can sit in the throwing lane and bait the quarterback into a pick six on a hot read or check down.
Pair this call with Cover 1 Hole Press or Cover 1 Robber Press in your play-calling sequence to disguise the same shell while varying the physicality at the line of scrimmage.
Avoid calling this against heavy vertical stacks or trips bunch sets since the four man rush combined with one deep safety leaves no help against double moves or deep comebacks on the boundary corner.
