Cover 3 Hard Flat is a three deep, four under zone coverage out of the 4-3 Under Base personnel. The three deep defenders sink into deep thirds while the two flat defenders (the hard flat corners) squat hard on the underneath flat zones to take away quick outs and hitches, and the two remaining underneath defenders drop into the curl to hook areas. This is a zone coverage shell built to defend quick game and stop flat routes and screens, with the primary read progression starting at the flat defenders to see if they widen with any immediate flat threats before working to the middle hook zone defenders and finally the deep thirds.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and corner alignment since a two high shell rotating to three deep signals this exact coverage and lets you anticipate the hard flat jump. Post-snap, key the running back and slot receiver release since any flat route or bubble screen is exactly what the hard flat defenders are designed to eliminate. Watch for offenses attacking the seams and deep thirds with vertical routes since the flat defenders are locked low and the deep three can get stressed by multiple verticals. This coverage beats spacing concepts, shallow crossers into the flat, and screen game hard, but struggles against four verticals or deep out and comeback combos that stretch the deep third defenders. If the user controls a flat defender and jumps a route early, expect the middle hook defender to be late getting to any drag or crosser working through the vacated zone.
Use this call on early downs or third and short when you expect quick game or flat routes since the hard flat defenders sit low and jump routes to the boundary immediately.
Bait quarterbacks who love throwing to the flat by squatting the flat defenders hard at the snap, then user one of them to jump underneath timing throws.
Pair this play with Cover 3 Seam Press in your play-calling sequence so offenses cannot key on the deep third landmarks based on flat defender depth alone.
Mix in Cover 1 Hole Press or Cover 1 Contain Press after running this a few times to disguise the shell and punish quarterbacks who read hard flat leverage as a tell for zone.
Avoid calling this against heavy vertical stacks or four verticals concepts since the flat defenders are locked in low and leave the deep thirds thinner against multiple deep threats.
