Sam Blitz 2 is an LB blitz package out of the 4-3 Under Base personnel that brings the Sam linebacker off the edge while dropping into a Cover 2 zone shell behind it. The defensive line still generates a four man rush look, but the Sam blitzer adds a fifth rusher, forcing the offensive line or running back to account for an extra gap on one side. Underneath, the corners and remaining linebackers sink into their Cover 2 zone drops while the two safeties split the deep half, so the primary read as the defense is to key the quarterback's eyes and close on any route that settles into the intermediate hook or flat zones vacated by the blitzing Sam.

Pre-snap, check the running back alignment since a back staying in to block or releasing outside will tell you whether the Sam blitz gets picked up cleanly Watch the tight end release, if he stays in to chip block the Sam is delayed and coverage underneath must hold longer against man beaters This call beats offenses that rely on quick three step drops or hitches since the extra rusher disrupts timing before receivers can separate It struggles against hard play-action rollouts and RPOs that read the blitzing linebacker, since a vacated flat or alley can be exploited by a run fit or bootleg throw Post-snap, key the quarterback's initial read to the flat or seam, and be ready to sink the underneath zone defenders if a receiver settles into the void left by the Sam blitzer Against trips or bunch formations to the blitz side, expect natural picks that can slow the Sam's rush, so time the blitz slightly later to avoid running into traffic
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or short yardage passing situations where the offense is likely to run a quick game or short drop, since the extra rusher can get home before deeper routes develop
Before the snap identify the offensive formation strength and align the Sam blitz to the tight end or strongside receiver so the blitzer has a shorter path to the quarterback
User the Sam linebacker yourself off the snap to control his blitz timing and avoid getting picked up by a chipping running back or tight end
Pair this call with Cover 2 Invert or Tampa 2 in your play-calling sequence so opponents cannot sit on the same underneath zone shell every snap
Watch for hot routes or sight adjustments from the offense that attack the flat immediately vacated by the blitzing Sam, and be ready to spy or bail into that zone if you diagnose a quick pass pre-snap
