Breakdown

WK Corner Blitz is a man pressure package out of the Under 4-3 that sends the weak side cornerback off the edge as an extra rusher while the defense rotates into a one high man shell behind it. This is a blitz play, not a coverage-first call, designed to overload the weak side protection with a hard corner blitz off the edge while linebackers fill underneath. The primary read for the blitzer is the offensive tackle or running back assignment, if the corner gets a clean run lane the quarterback has to get the ball out immediately or eat a sack, if blocked the defense still has man coverage on the back end to hold up.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify whether the running back or tight end is aligned to the weak side, that assignment determines if the corner blitz gets a free run or gets picked up. Watch safety depth before the snap, a two high shell that rotates down late means the defense is disguising into this man blitz look, a true one high shell means the blitz is live from the start. Post snap, key the offensive line slide protection, if the tackle turns out to block the corner the interior rush lanes open up for the defensive tackles and end. This play gets shut down by quick game concepts like slants and hitches that beat man coverage before the blitz arrives, and by RPO reads where the quarterback pulls it against the vacated edge. It wins against play action with a slow developing rollout because the corner blitz collapses the pocket before the quarterback can climb the pocket or reset his feet.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and medium when the offense is in a passing personnel that leaves a tight end or running back to block the corner blitz, that mismatch is where the pressure wins. Check the offensive formation pre snap for empty or spread sets, if the running back is not staying in to block the corner has a clean lane. User the weak side corner right at the snap to time the blitz and disguise it as a normal press alignment before the ball is snapped. Combine this with Cover 1 Hole Press and Cover 1 FS Fire in your play calling sequence so quarterbacks see the same press man look and cannot key the blitz off alignment alone. Avoid calling this against empty formations with no blocker assigned to the weak side edge unless you are confident in the pre snap disguise, quick game beats it easily.
