Breakdown

Free Fire is a five man pressure package out of the 4-3 Under Base personnel, sending extra rushers off the diagram while the underneath defenders funnel ball carriers or dump routes downhill. The near linebacker/DE spills outside contain while the interior rushers stack vertical push before crashing down through the gaps, and a lone underneath defender sits as a green dog spy or lurk threat off the running back. This is a blitz package designed to beat man protection schemes and RPO reads by collapsing the pocket faster than the offensive line can slide, and the primary "read" for the defense is the quarterback's eyes: get after him before the hot route or check down develops.

Defensive Reads

Key the offensive line splits pre-snap: wide splits usually mean the offense is anticipating pressure and will slide protection, so consider audibling to a different look. Watch the running back's initial step after the snap; if he stays in to chip or block, your extra rusher wins outside leverage immediately. This blitz gets beat by quick game concepts like slants and stick routes, so if the offense shows a bunch or trips formation with fast splits, be ready to bail if the timing is off. Look for the quarterback to climb the pocket against inside pressure; the spy or lurk defender must stay patient and not bite on shoulder fakes. Avoid calling this against heavy play-action or rollout tendencies since the extra rusher can overrun the play and open a lane for a rollout throwback.

Usage Tips

Call Free Fire on passing downs against shotgun spread formations where the offense lacks extra blockers to pick up five rushers.

Check the running back's alignment pre-snap: if he is releasing into a route instead of blocking, user the spy/lurk defender to jump the check down and eliminate the hot route.

Disguise this blitz by showing Cover 1 Hole or Cover 3 Match pre-snap from the same personnel group, then bring the extra rusher at the snap to keep the quarterback guessing.

Pair Free Fire with Cover 1 Hole Press and Hammer 0 Blast in the same play calling sequence so the offense cannot tee off on one blitz look after seeing your tendencies.

Use Free Fire on third and long or in two minute situations when the offense is more likely to max protect and slide protection the wrong direction.
