Inside Zone Split is a zone run play out of Singleback Wing Flex Close with 12 personnel, giving you two tight ends to help seal the edge and add a lead blocker on the backside. The offensive line steps in unison to the play call side, reading the first level defenders and working combo blocks up to the second level, while the HB presses the line and reads his blocking flow to find the crease. This is a run play, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read progression is playside gap to backside cutback, meaning the ball carrier should press the initial hole first and only bounce to the backside if the playside is clogged.
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they are sitting shallow and reading run keys immediately, they are likely scheme fit to spill this zone run and force it outside. Look for the defensive line shifting hard to the play side pre-snap, which signals a run blitz or gap exchange designed to blow up the interior blocking scheme. Man beater blitzes with a lurking linebacker in the backside cutback lane will erase this play, so key on any user controlled defender sitting in the B gap opposite the flow. Against a light box with safeties rotated away from the formation, this play beats zone shells cleanly since there are fewer bodies to fill run fits. If the defense shows heavy inside blitz pressure with both linebackers crashing downhill, expect the cutback lane to open, but only if your offensive line can hold the initial double team long enough for the back to redirect.
Check the box count before the snap and confirm you have a numbers advantage against the front, since Inside Zone Split thrives when the defense is in a 6 man box or lighter.
Identify whether the defense is in a two high or one high shell, because one high looks with stacked linebackers can clog the interior gaps and force you to rely on the cutback lane.
Use the HB hot route sparingly here, this play is designed to hit downhill quickly, so avoid overcommitting to a bounce read against fast flowing linebackers.
Pair this play with HB Dive and HB Toss Weak in your called sequence to keep the defense honest, since all three threaten different gaps off similar pre-snap looks.
Run this on early downs, especially 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, to stay ahead of the sticks and set up PA Boot Corner or PA Cross Switch off the same personnel later in the series.
