HB Zone Wk is a weak side inside zone run out of Singleback Trips with 11 personnel. The offensive line flows to the weak side (away from the trips bunch) with the HB taking a lateral zone step before pressing into whichever crease the frontside blockers create, reading the playside guard and tackle combo blocks first. This is a pure run play with no route concepts attached, so success depends on the HB patiently setting up the wall of blockers rather than forcing the ball to a predetermined gap.
Watch the weak side defensive end and outside linebacker alignment pre-snap, if they are crashing hard down the line this play can bounce outside for a big cutback gain. Identify whether the Mike linebacker is flowing with the zone step or staying home, a disciplined Mike who reads the backfield action will limit this run to short gains. Look for safeties rotating down into the box against Trips formations, since a single high safety look often means an extra run defender lurking near the weak side alley. Check linebacker depth at the snap, linebackers sitting shallow can trigger fast and blow up the zone scheme before the line gets a good push. Man coverage with press corners on the trips receivers usually signals a lighter box, which favors this run, while zone shells with linebackers spying the backfield are tougher to gash.
Check the box count before the snap since the trips formation often pulls a linebacker or safety out of the box, giving you a numbers advantage on the weak side.
Use this play on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short to medium) to stay ahead of the sticks and keep defenses honest against your Trips passing concepts.
If the defense shows a heavy box or an overload blitz to the run side, motion the trips receiver or check to HB Draw or Bubble Screen to attack the vacated space instead.
Pair HB Zone Wk with HB Power O and HB Stretch in the same game plan so defenders cannot key run direction based on formation alone.
Trust the natural cutback lane, do not rush the HB north before the zone step blockers have time to displace their defenders.
