PA Y Glance is a play-action shot play out of Singleback Trips with 11 personnel. Off the run fake, the trips side shows a vertical seam route from the outermost receiver, a deep dig that stems left across the field, and an underneath receiver breaking outside then vertical up the seam, while the backside TE runs a deep vertical release and the HB releases to the flat as a checkdown out of the backfield. The primary read starts with the seam vertical route on the trips side, works to the crossing dig behind it, and finishes with the HB flat route as the outlet if the play-action holds the linebackers long enough.
Defensive Reads
Watch the strong safety pre-snap, if he is cheating up into the box, the seam route on the trips side will have room to work behind the play-action freeze. Man coverage without safety help over the top is vulnerable to the vertical seam and the crossing dig, since defenders trailing will be a step behind on the breaks. Zone coverage with sinking linebackers can undercut the shallow crosser, so read the depth of the underneath zone defenders before throwing the dig. A user-controlled defender lurking in the middle of the field can jump the crossing route, so have a plan to reset to the HB flat if you see him sitting in that window. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with disciplined safeties will take away the deep seam, forcing you to rely on the shorter flat route as the primary outlet.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs when defenses are keying run action from Singleback Trips personnel.
Look for single-high safety shells pre-snap since the play-action freeze on linebackers opens up the vertical seam and dig combo underneath.
If the defense shows two-high shells, hot route the outermost trips receiver to a shorter route or check down early to the HB flat since the deep shots will be covered.
Pair this call with HB Dive or HB Zone Wk earlier in a series to sell the run fake and force linebackers to bite harder on the play-action.
Combine this with Curl Combo or Stick later in the drive once the defense adjusts to the play-action tendency, giving you a quick game answer against the same look.
