PA Boot from Singleback Trips is a play-action rollout that hits off a run fake to move the pocket and attack one side of the field with layered routes. The trips side shows a deep corner route from the outside receiver, a deep dig from the slot working across the field, and a shallow flat route from the inner slot receiver that fills underneath as the checkdown. The backside TE runs a corner route to hold the opposite safety while the RB releases into the flat away from the boot action, giving the QB a two way go on his rollout. Primary read progression starts with the deep dig crossing over the middle, works down to the flat route underneath, and comes back to the backside corner or checkdown if the pocket collapses.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a linebacker sitting flat footed at the snap, that is a sign the run fake did not sell and he is already reading pass, which telegraphs zone drops underneath the dig. Key the flat defender on the boot side, if he widens hard with the flat route it opens a throwing lane behind him for the dig route sitting down in the same area. Identify Cover 3 by a single high safety staying deep middle at the snap, this leaves the deep dig with a soft window against underneath zone defenders who are reading run first. Man coverage shells show corners mirroring receivers at the snap with no safety help over the top on the trips side, which favors the corner route beating a trail technique defender. Beware a user controlled defender spying the QB on the boot side, this kills the rollout advantage and forces an early checkdown to the RB or flat route before the play fully develops.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs or second and short to sell the run fake and freeze linebackers before they can drop into their zone landmarks.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if both safeties are deep it signals a two high shell that opens up the dig route working behind the linebackers.
Roll the QB out fully before checking your reads so you stay ahead of edge pressure and keep the boot action full speed for pass protection timing.
