Bubble Screen out of Singleback Trips is a quick-hitting screen pass designed to get the ball into space on the perimeter. The two outside receivers in the trips bunch block their nearest defenders while the middle slot receiver bubbles out behind the line of scrimmage to catch the pass and turn upfield. The primary read is immediate: the QB looks to the bubbling slot receiver as soon as the snap hits, relying on the blocking WRs to spring him for extra yardage. This is a zone beater at its core, punishing soft zone drops and off man coverage that gives up easy underneath separation.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing zone with defenders backpedaling off the trips bunch, this is the green light to call the bubble. Watch for a sky corner or overhang defender who reads screen fast and squats outside the numbers, this defender can blow up the play before the blockers get set. User a linebacker or slot defender to spy the bubble route immediately after the snap rather than committing to a blitz, this cuts off the easy completion. Man coverage with press alignment on the outside trips receivers is a strong deterrent since it disrupts the blocking angles needed to seal the edge. Aggressive run blitzes and nano blitz packages can actually help the offense here, since blitzing linebackers vacate the exact space the bubble receiver runs into.
Fire this out quickly against soft zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 where the corner and flat defender sit off the trips side pre-snap.
Check the alignment of the nearest linebacker and slot corner before the snap, if they are crashing hard on run action or blitzing off the edge this screen punishes them instantly.
Use hot routes sparingly here, this play works best untouched since the blocking assignments are already built in for the two outside receivers.
Call this on early downs or after establishing inside runs like HB Dive or HB Zone Wk to bait linebackers into cheating up, then hit the bubble to exploit the space they vacated.
Pair this with Curl Combo or Stick from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and screen concepts without changing personnel.
