Breakdown

Corner Double In is a trips-based route combo out of Singleback Trips 11 personnel that stacks two inside breaking routes with a deep corner route from the outside receiver. The diagram shows the outside trips receiver running a deep corner route to clear the sideline, while the two inside trips receivers run in routes that stack at the same depth to flood the middle of the field. The fourth receiver runs a shallow in route from the backside, giving the quarterback a full field stretch with an isolated route on the backside and a three level flood to the trips side. This is a man beater at its core, using the double in stack to create natural rub traffic while the corner route occupies the deep defender, with the primary read progressing from the corner route to the double in stack and finally to the backside shallow in as the checkdown.

Defensive Reads

Watch the deep corner route first, if a user controlled safety jumps the corner route and abandons his zone drop, the QB should immediately climb the progression to the double in stack. Key the linebackers at the snap, if they sink hard to the stacked in routes and collapse the throwing lane, the corner route on the outside becomes the more open window. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can undercut the shallow in route on the backside, so do not force that throw if the flat defender sits low and squares up the receiver. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the ideal shell for this play, since the double in stack creates natural traffic that disrupts man technique and the corner route wins on separation. Watch for a nano blitz or overload pressure package, since the deep drop time this play needs makes it vulnerable if the offensive line cannot pick up extra rushers.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing man or zone by checking cornerback alignment on the trips side, tight coverage with no cushion signals man and favors the natural rub from the double in stack.

Look for a single high safety shell, if the safety cheats to the trips side to help on the corner route, the backside shallow in against a lone defender becomes the fastest access throw.

Use hot routes to convert the double in routes to sit routes against zone if you see linebackers sinking into passing lanes underneath the stack.

This play works best on second and medium to second and long, since it takes a full route progression to develop and needs time in the pocket.

Pair this with Curl Combo or Stick from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and the deeper corner double in shot, then hit this play once the defense starts jumping underneath routes.
