Primary read progression starts with the backside dig cutting across the field, then works to the crossing route working underneath from the trips side, and finishes with the HB up the middle if the pocket collapses or the linebackers sink into the shallow crosser.
Defensive Reads
Identify two high safety shells before the snap since the deep corner route from the trips side can be taken away by a defender rotating to that deep third or deep half zone. Watch linebacker depth at the snap because shallow zone droppers who sink under the crosser will jump the underdneath throw and create a user pick six opportunity. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest liability for the defense since the backside dig and crosser both create natural separation against trailing defenders. Blitz packages that bring five or six rushers can beat this play before the routes develop, so watch for overload pressure to the strong side that forces a quick checkdown to the HB. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can wall off the crosser, so look for defenders sitting in the intermediate zone rather than dropping deep to take away this throw.
Usage Tips
Look for single high safety shells pre-snap since the backside dig will have room to work behind linebackers if the safety cheats to the trips side.
Use the crosser as your rhythm throw against man coverage because the natural pick and traffic from trips alignment creates separation against man defenders trailing from behind.
Motion the inner trips receiver before the snap to confirm man versus zone based on whether a defender follows across the formation.
Hot route the HB into a chip block or check release depending on the front, especially against four man rush looks where the interior line needs help.
