HB Draw out of Singleback Trips is a delayed run play designed to freeze the linebackers with a play-action style pause before the RB presses the hole. The diagram shows three receivers to the trips side and the TE running vertical stems to hold the defense deep while the offensive line sets up in a pass-blocking look before climbing to the second level. The RB starts as if pass blocking, drops back slightly, then takes the delayed handoff and cuts to the open lane created by the linebackers biting on the fake pass rush. This is purely a run play designed to counter aggressive pass rush upfield momentum, not a man or zone beater in the route sense, and the primary read is patience up front followed by a one cut decision based on which gap the linebackers vacate.
Watch for defensive ends and interior linemen crashing hard upfield off the snap, since HB Draw is designed to exploit that exact aggression. Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he stays shallow and reads the mesh point instead of dropping into coverage he can blow up the play before it develops. Man coverage shells with blitzing linebackers are the most vulnerable since rushers overrun the play and leave cutback lanes wide open. Disciplined zone defenses like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with linebackers staying square and reading backfield action tend to shut this play down by filling gaps before the RB commits. Look for a spy or scrape exchange from the defense, which signals the CPU or opposing user has diagnosed the draw tendency and will fill the cutback lane.
Call this play on early downs or in obvious passing situations like 2nd and long or 3rd and medium when the defense shows blitz or an aggressive four man rush look.
Pre-snap, identify if the linebackers are stacked tight to the line or showing blitz, since HB Draw thrives against upfield pass rush momentum and struggles against disciplined gap control defenses.
Let the play develop fully before pressing a direction on the stick, the delayed mesh point is what creates the running lane so resist the urge to burst immediately.
Pair this with PA Boot or PA Solid Corner from the same trips look so the defense has to respect play action out of the same formation, keeping second level defenders honest.
Mix HB Draw with HB Dive and HB Zone Wk in the same drive to keep linebackers guessing between quick hitting runs and the delayed draw look.
