HB Dive out of Singleback Trips 11 personnel is a straight downhill run play with the HB aligned behind the QB, taking a direct handoff and hitting the interior gap immediately. The offensive line blocks down with double teams at the point of attack designed to seal the front and create a vertical crease before the second level linebackers can flow. This is a pure run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read is the playside guard and center double team, hitting the gap the instant it opens rather than dancing or bouncing outside.
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check linebacker depth since stacked fronts with linebackers within four yards of the line kill this play before it starts. Watch for a Mike linebacker cheating toward the play call or a defensive tackle shaded into the playside gap, both are signs the defense is keying run. Post-snap, user the defensive tackle or Mike linebacker to shoot the gap immediately rather than reading blocks, since HB Dive lives and dies on the first two steps. This play struggles badly against goal line or heavy run fronts with extra defensive linemen, but it exploits nickel and dime sub packages that sacrifice size for coverage. If the defense shows blitz with linebackers crashing off the edge, the interior lanes often stay clean, so trust the double team up front and do not bail on the run.
Call this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when you need to establish tempo and keep defenses honest against your Trips passing concepts.
Pre-snap, look for light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box since HB Dive struggles against stacked fronts with extra run support.
If you see the defense sliding to Trips with a nickel or dime look, this play can catch light interior fronts off guard for easy yardage.
Pair HB Dive with HB Power O and HB Zone Wk in your play-calling sequence so linebackers cannot sit on one blocking scheme, then hit them with Sft Mtn PA Dagger Crosser off the same look once they start crashing down.
Use the quick hitting nature of this play to control clock in four minute situations or to set up manageable third downs without exposing your QB to a sack.
