RPO Stretch Alert Lookie is an outside zone RPO out of Singleback Trips 11 personnel that gives the QB a true run-pass conflict read on the backside. The offensive line and HB execute the outside zone stretch play to the boundary while the backside X runs a quick slant, the inline TE runs an out breaking route, and the trips WR closest to the formation runs a corner route reading the alley defender. The primary read progression starts with the run key at the second level, if that defender crashes to stop the zone run the QB pulls and throws the backside slant, and if he sits the QB hands off the stretch run.
Defensive Reads
Watch the alley defender or force defender on the backside edge presnap, his run fit dictates whether the QB hands off or throws the slant. Linebacker depth is critical, shallow linebackers who key run flow immediately open up the slant window behind them. Cover 3 and Cover 1 shells that rotate a safety down into the box are vulnerable because the underneath flat defender cannot cover both the run fit and the slant. User controlled defenders who spy the QB or sit in the backside slant window can shut this down, so avoid this call if the defense shows a pre-snap sniff on RPO tendencies. Two high shells with disciplined linebackers who stay square and do not crash the line take away the pull read and force the offense into the zone run as a true 11 on 11 blocking down.
Usage Tips
Presnap identify the alley defender or force player on the backside, this is the exact key the RPO logic is built around.
If the box count is light and the linebackers show run flow keys, trust the zone run and let the HB press the edge.
Use the slant hot as your answer versus scraping linebackers or Cover 3 sky defenders who fly downhill on zone action.
Pair this call with HB Stretch and HB Zone Wk from the same set so the run action looks identical presnap, forcing the defense to respect zone every snap before you pull the RPO.
This is a strong first and second down call in run heavy personnel packages, and it is especially effective on early downs when defenses are stacking the box to stop inside zone or HB Dive.
