Breakdown

HB Stretch out of Singleback Trips is an outside zone run play designed to get the HB horizontally to the edge before making a vertical cut. The three trips receivers stay on the perimeter without stalk block routes shown, while the offensive line flows laterally to the play side to seal the edge and create a cutback lane. This is a zone run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression is the HB reading the playside edge defender first, then the double team at the point of attack, before deciding whether to bounce outside or cut back through the natural cutback lane.

Defensive Reads

Key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker leverage, since a hard crash inside opens the cutback lane while outside contain forces the bounce. Watch safety depth before the snap, since a safety cheating into the box signals run support and should trigger a cutback read behind the double team. Identify if the defense is in a one high or two high shell, since stretch runs are more vulnerable to two high shells with quicker flow to the edge from the slot defenders. Post-snap, track the playside linebacker's pursuit angle, since aggressive linebackers flowing too fast to the sideline get erased by the cutback if the HB presses the mesh point patiently. Beware of user-controlled defenders spying the backfield or crashing the A gap, since a fast diagnosing user defender can blow up the zone scheme before the double team is set.

Usage Tips

Run this out of Trips to force defenses to declare their run fits versus a spread look, since defenders have to respect the trips side before the snap.

Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since the stretch scheme relies on the offensive line winning zone flow without extra gap help.

Use the HB Stretch to set up HB Dive and HB Draw later in a series, since all three plays start with similar backfield action and force linebackers to freeze on their run fit reads.

Hot route the trips receivers into stalk blocks if the defense is showing an overloaded box, giving your zone blockers extra time to reach the second level.

Call this on early downs (first and ten, second and short) to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense guessing between run and RPO looks from the same formation.
