Counter Y out of Singleback Doubles Y Off is a gap scheme power run play built to hit off tackle with a lead blocker pulling from the backside. The diagram shows the offensive line down blocking to seal the interior while a puller kicks out the edge defender, with the HB taking a counter step before pressing the hole behind that lead block. This is a run play designed to punish overaggressive fronts and linebackers who flow too fast to the flow side, with the primary read being the HB reading the kick out block first and then the puller in space to decide between bouncing outside or cutting up inside the double team.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap identify the Mike linebacker and see if he is stacked in the A or B gap since Counter Y wants him flowing hard away from the play before the puller kicks him out of position. Check safety depth: a single high safety cheating toward the boundary or an 8 man box is a sign the defense expects run and can beat this play with quick fills. Post-snap watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in the backfield gap or spying the counter action, since a disciplined defender who stays home on the backside can blow this play up before the puller gets there. This run beats teams playing base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts that flow hard to initial steps, but it struggles against gap-sound defenses with disciplined linebackers who read pull blockers and scrape over the top. Watch for edge defenders crashing down hard, since a good counter blocker needs that aggression to seal the kick out block effectively.
Usage Tips
Run this play when linebackers are showing aggressive downhill triggers or flowing hard to jet motion and play action looks earlier in the drive. Use pre-snap motion sparingly here since the counter action already manipulates linebacker flow, but if you do motion, check that the defense does not roll a safety down into the box. Best called on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the chains. Pair this with PA Power O and HB Power O from the same set so linebackers cannot key on backfield action, and mix in Jet Sweep or Jet HB Trap to keep the defense honest on outside flow before coming back to Counter Y. If the defense shows a heavy box with 8 defenders, consider hitting Four Verticals or PA WR Out first to force the safety out of the box.
