Jet PA Boot uses jet motion across the backfield to sell the outside run action before the QB boots out to the sideline, faking a handoff and rolling with pass protection sliding the same direction. Off the play-action fake, the diagram shows a shallow drag crossing underneath from the backside, a short out or flat route breaking toward the sideline near the sticks, and two vertical clearout routes up the seams and sideline from the outside receivers to hold the deep defenders. The primary read progression starts with the flat or out route as the boot-side outlet, then works to the shallow drag crossing the field, using the two vertical routes to occupy safeties and clear underneath space. This is a play-action man beater that also stresses zone defenders who bite on the jet motion and run fake.
Defensive Reads
Key the middle linebacker and safety depth before the snap, since shallow safety alignment or linebackers stacked close to the line signals they will bite on the run fake and open up the boot flat and drag. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled defender flowing hard with the jet motion or the run fake, which leaves the backside crossing route wide open behind him. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined linebackers who sit on the drag route and refuse to bite on the fake will shut down the underneath options and force a low percentage vertical throw. Man coverage without a deep safety rotated to the boot side is vulnerable to the vertical route beating the corner once he turns to recover from the run fake. Blitzes off the backside edge away from the boot can still get home despite the roll, so track edge pressure timing since the QB has to plant and throw quickly if the protection does not hold.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or manageable third downs when the defense has shown aggressive run fits against jet motion or outside zone looks. Watch pre-snap for linebackers cheating toward the motion or safeties rotating down into the box, since that confirms the play-action fake will hold defenders long enough for the boot to open up. If you get man coverage with no safety help over the top, take the shot on the vertical route since the corner has to fight through the run fake before recovering. Against zone shells, work the boot flat first then peek the drag since underneath defenders often widen with the QB roll and leave a soft spot behind them. Pair this with Jet Sweep and Jet HB Trap earlier in a drive to condition the defense to bite on jet motion, then hit this boot concept off the same look to punish overaggressive linebacker flow.
