Defensive Reads
Identify two high safety shells pre-snap, since this tells you the deep middle is open for the far in route to settle in behind the linebackers. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard to take away the shallow in route you should progress immediately to the deeper in breaking toward the middle of the field. Cover 3 with a hard flowing middle linebacker is the biggest threat to this concept, since a well timed zone drop can undercut both in routes and bait a turnover. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the in cuts if your receivers win their release, but a disguised blitz can force a hurried throw before the routes develop. Watch for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow zone or spying the middle, since that is the primary threat to sitting on the underneath in route and jumping the throw.
Usage Tips
Take a pre-snap look at the safety shell before the snap, two high safeties usually means the deep in route has room to sit down between the hashes while single high alerts you to man coverage underneath.
Hot route your running back into a flat or check release if you are facing heavy pressure looks, since the in routes take time to develop and you need a valve against blitz-heavy fronts.
This play shines on second and medium to second and long when defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells, since the in routes need a beat to clear underneath traffic.
Pair Ins Left with Four Verticals from the same set to keep defenses honest, if they start jumping the in routes with linebackers you can hit the vertical shots for explosive plays.
Against man coverage, use your route stem to sell an out cut before breaking inside, and target the underneath in route quickly before a user controlled defender can close the throwing lane.
