PA WR Out is a play-action shot play out of Singleback Doubles Y Off that sells the run fake before working an out route breaking toward the sideline as the primary target. The play action freezes linebackers and second level defenders, creating a passing lane for the boundary breaking route while the tight end and backside receivers occupy underneath zones or man defenders. This is a man beater against aggressive corners playing off the ball, and it also stretches zone defenses that bite on the run fake, with the out route as the first read followed by any crossing or hook routes underneath as the checkdown progression.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells since single high indicates more man coverage underneath which favors the out route Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they step up hard on the play action fake it confirms they are respecting run and the passing lanes will open quickly Post-snap, key the flat defender or curl to flat zone defender, if he sits and reads the quarterback's eyes he can jump the out route route for a jump ball opportunity This play struggles against zone coverages with disciplined linebackers who do not bite on the run fake, since they can sink into the passing lanes and take away the out route Watch for user controlled defenders sitting in a lurk position underneath, aggressive users can bait a quarterback into throwing the out route into a jump situation Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with corners playing off can bracket the out route, so check for underneath robbers or nickel defenders creeping toward the sideline before committing to the throw
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs, especially 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, when the defense is respecting the run based on personnel and prior play calls
Look at the safety depth pre-snap, if both safeties are sitting deep in a two high shell the play action fake will not hold them but the out route can still work against man coverage underneath
Motion or shift can help identify man versus zone before the snap, watch for defenders shadowing across the formation
If the corner is playing tight man press coverage, hot route the out to a quicker breaking route or move to a different concept since the out route needs space to develop
Pair this with HB Power O or HB Dive earlier in a series to sell the run fake harder, then hit PA WR Out once the defense starts crashing down on run action
Use PA Jet Sweep Scissors or Jet Sweep as changeup calls in the same series to keep linebackers guessing on run fits
