WR Deep Hook out of Singleback Doubles Y Off is a zone beater built around a deep hook route that settles into soft spots between the underneath and deep zone defenders. The concept pairs the hook with vertical and crossing routes from the other receivers to stretch the field both horizontally and vertically, forcing linebackers and safeties to choose between the sit route and the deeper threats. Blocking is standard pass protection with the RB releasing late as a checkdown, and the primary read progression starts with the deep hook against zone drops before working outside to the vertical routes if a defender jumps the sit route.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and cornerback alignment to identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells since those zones leave the deep hook window vulnerable. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled linebacker or safety sitting in the hook zone lane, as this indicates a lurk read designed to jump the sit route. Man coverage looks like press alignment on the outside receivers, and against man this play loses value since the hook route has no natural rub or pick to separate. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties can undercut the hook if the flat defender sinks quickly, so be ready to check to the vertical route on the backside. Blitz packages that bring extra pressure off the edge will collapse the pocket before the hook route develops, so identify blitz alignments pre-snap and consider a hot route or check down instead.
Look for two high safeties or a shell that suggests zone coverage before snapping this play since the deep hook is designed to punish soft zones like Cover 3 or Cover 4.
Use your pre-snap motion to identify if a linebacker or nickel defender is spying the hook zone, and hot route the hook receiver to a corner route if you see aggressive underneath coverage.
This play works best on second and medium to long third down situations where the offense needs a chunk gain but still has an outlet through the checkdown.
Sequence this call after HB Dive or HB Power O to get linebackers biting on run fits, which opens up the hook sit route for an easy completion against soft zone drops.
Pair this with Four Verticals in your play-calling script so defenders cannot sit on the same intermediate zone read snap after snap, keeping the defense honest.
