HB Ace Power is a gap scheme run play out of Singleback Doubles Y Off that pulls the backside guard to lead through the hole, giving the fullback-less 11 personnel look extra beef on the point of attack. The line down blocks in unison while the puller kicks out or leads up on the first threat past the tackle, letting the HB press the hole and read the puller's block before deciding to bounce or stick it in the crease. This is a run play, not a play-action or RPO, so the primary read progression is simple: press the mesh point, key the pulling guard's block angle, and choose between the designed A or B gap crease versus bouncing outside if the edge collapses inward.
Pre-snap, count the box. Six defenders or fewer in the box is a green light, seven or more means you should consider hitting the audible to a passing concept instead. Watch linebacker depth at the snap. Linebackers sitting tight to the line will trigger fast, so be ready to cut the run off the puller's hip rather than pressing too far into the line. Identify if the defense is running a 3-4 look with edge defenders crashing hard inside, since that alignment can clog the designed gap and force a bounce read. This play struggles against aggressive nano blitzes or overloaded fronts where extra defenders shoot gaps untouched, since the pulling guard cannot account for penetration before it reaches the mesh point. Man coverage on the perimeter with safeties in deep halves or deep thirds is the ideal shell, since it pulls extra bodies away from the box and leaves the interior lighter for the pulling guard to work.
Run this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when you have identified light boxes with six or fewer defenders after your pre-snap read.
Check the strong safety and Mike linebacker depth before the snap. If they are sitting tight to the line, expect a fast fill and consider bouncing your run outside with the correct hole assignment.
Pair this with HB Draw and HB Dive from the same set to keep defenses guessing on interior run tempo, since all three hit downhill but at different timing.
Use PA Power O and PA WR Out afterward once you have established Ace Power, since the play-action variants mirror the same initial line movement and freeze aggressive linebackers who are flowing hard to stop the run.
Avoid calling this into stacked fronts with extra defenders in the box, since the pulling guard will have trouble reaching the second level cleanly against gap-clogged fronts.
