Jet HB Trap is a run play out of Singleback Doubles Y Off that uses jet motion across the formation to pull the defense laterally before the snap. The offensive line executes a trap blocking scheme, pulling an interior lineman to kick out the first threat off the edge while the rest of the line seals inside gaps, and the HB takes the handoff and reads the trap block to find the crease. This is a power run design built to punish overaggressive defensive fronts, and the primary read progression is the trap block first, then the HB decides between the A-gap crease or bouncing outside if the alley opens up.
Defensive Reads
Watch for defensive ends and linebackers crashing hard toward the jet motion, since that flow creates the natural cutback lane this trap scheme is designed to exploit. Look for a defensive tackle or edge defender staying home and reading the trap puller instead of following the motion man, which is the key indicator this play will get shut down. Check safety depth before the snap, if the strong safety is stacked in the box or shows quick run support, expect a hard fill on the trap hole. Post-snap, key the pulling lineman's kick out block, if the user-controlled defender gets under the block and knifes inside, the HB needs to cut back immediately rather than press the hole. Beware of a nano blitz or interior stunt from the defensive line, since a well-timed penetration can beat the trap block before the puller arrives and blow up the play behind the line of scrimmage.
Usage Tips
Use the jet motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone before the snap, since defenders following the motion man across the formation confirm man coverage and open up the trap lane behind them.
Call this play on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when you want to stay ahead of the chains without tipping run on obvious passing downs.
Pair Jet HB Trap with Jet Sweep and PA Jet Sweep Scissors in the same drive so the defense has to respect the jet motion going both directions, which slows down linebacker flow to the trap side.
If the defense shows a heavy box with linebackers crashing down pre-snap, consider hot routing the TE to a chip block to help the trap puller seal the edge defender.
Sell the fake hard on Jet PA Boot later in the game once you have established Jet HB Trap, since defenders keying the jet motion for run will bite and open up the play-action boot behind them.
