HB Power O out of Singleback Doubles Y Off is a gap scheme run play built to move a defender down the line with a lead blocker while the backside guard pulls to kick out the edge defender and create a lane for the fullback or tackle to seal off the linebacker level. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO, and it wins by overloading one side of the box with double team blocks at the point of attack while the pulling lineman handles the force defender. The primary read is the pulling guard, since the HB should press the hole downhill off his hip and read the block on the edge defender to decide between bending backside or bouncing outside if the double team on the play side gets movement.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a defensive tackle who is shaded hard into the play side gap, since a well aligned 3 technique can blow up the double team before the pulling guard arrives and force a negative play. Key the strong side outside linebacker or edge defender's depth at the snap, since a player who is crashing hard down the line will collide with the pulling guard and win the kick out rep almost every time. Look for a user controlled defender spying the pulling guard's path, since good competitive players will manually key the puller and shoot the gap he vacates to blow up the play before the HB can turn upfield. Against a stacked box or run blitz, the play side linebacker filling fast into the hole is the biggest threat, so the HB must be ready to cut back away from the overload rather than force it into a loaded gap. If the defense shows a two high safety shell with light box numbers, this run scheme hits hard, but a single high safety who is aggressive downhill against the run can add a numbers advantage that shuts this play down.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run HB Power O into light boxes with six or fewer defenders, since an extra run fitter at linebacker depth can flow fast enough to blow up the pulling guard's kick out block.
Identify the alignment of the strong side defensive end or edge player, since a wide 9 technique alignment gives the puller a cleaner angle while a tight 5 technique forces the HB to be patient and trust the double team longer before declaring a lane.
Motion or shift the TE presnap to check if the defense rotates a linebacker or safety down into the box, which tells you whether the defense is sitting on inside runs and whether you should bail to a different concept.
