Y Option out of Singleback Doubles Y Off is a man beater built around the tight end running an option route out of the middle of the field. The Y reads the depth and leverage of the covering linebacker or safety and breaks in, out, or sits down depending on how that defender plays him, while the outside receivers run vertical and out breaking routes to hold the corners and clear space underneath. Protection is a standard five man slide with the back releasing late as a checkdown, making this primarily a quick to intermediate passing concept rather than a shot play. The primary read progression starts with the Y option route, then works to the boundary out route, with the running back as the final checkdown against pressure.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check if a linebacker or safety is shaded over the Y in the slot, since a tight man alignment signals man coverage and a favorable matchup for the option route. Watch for a Mike linebacker creeping toward the line of scrimmage, which tips a blitz and means the Y option route needs to break quickly before pressure arrives. Post-snap, key the covering defender's first two steps: if he opens his hips to run with the Y vertically, break the route in behind him, and if he sits flat footed, break it away from him horizontally. Be wary of user controlled defenders lurking in the shallow middle zone, since a smart user will sit under the option route and jump the in cut read it as a bait for a pick six. This play struggles against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with disciplined zone linebackers who wall off the middle of the field, so look to check into a run or outside breaking concept if you see safeties rotated deep with underneath zone defenders sinking into the option route's landing spot.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man or zone by checking linebacker depth and whether the slot corner is bumped up on the Y. Against man coverage this play is money because the option route lets the tight end break away from a trailing linebacker, so trust the Y as your first read. Against zone shells, especially Cover 3 or Cover 4, hot route the Y option to a shallow drag or spot route to settle it into the soft underneath zone. This play works well on second and medium or third and short since the option route gives the tight end a built in answer to whatever the defender does. Pair Y Option with Four Verticals and PA WR Out from this same set to keep the defense honest, running Y Option early to bait linebackers into sitting on the tight end before hitting them with the vertical shots later in the drive.
