Breakdown

Spacing Switch is a trips-based bunch concept out of Singleback Bunch Ace that uses a switch release at the snap to confuse man defenders. The two inside bunch receivers cross paths with one running a quick out and the other bending into a corner route up the sideline, while the backside X runs an out breaking away from the formation, and the inline TE releases into a shallow drift underneath. This is a zone beater designed to attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 by flooding one side of the field with three levels, and the primary read progression starts with the corner route up top, works down to the switch out route in the middle, and finishes with the backside out as the checkdown.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment over the bunch, since two deep safeties usually signal Cover 4 while a single high safety signals Cover 3, both of which this concept is designed to exploit. Post-snap, key the corner over the bunch, if he sinks into a deep third or quarter without jumping the flat route, the corner route up the sideline will be open behind him. Watch for user controlled defenders lurking underneath the switch release, since a smart user player can jump the crossing routes and undercut the middle throw. If linebackers show blitz depth or crash the line pre-snap, expect a hot underneath throw to be available quickly, but be ready for a nano blitz that collapses the pocket before routes develop. Man coverage with press corners on the bunch is the primary counter to this play, since the switch release can get muddied and picked off timing if defenders play tight and physical at the line.

Usage Tips

Identify pre-snap whether the corner is playing off or bailing into a deep third, since the corner route wins immediately against soft zone shells.

Use motion or a hard count to bait linebackers before the snap and confirm if you are seeing Cover 3 or Cover 4, since this concept is built specifically to stress both shells.

If the defense shows man coverage across the bunch, hot route the corner route into a slant or the switch release into a quick speed out to counter the traffic and win with the natural rub.

Pair this play with PA Cross Switch or Z Spot from the same set to keep defenses guessing between play-action shots and quick spacing throws out of identical formation looks.

Use this on second and medium or third and short situations where defenses are likely to sit in zone drops, since the flat and out routes give you an easy underneath completion against soft coverage.
