Breakdown

Over HB Toss out of Singleback Bunch Ace is a perimeter run play that tosses the ball to the HB while the offensive line flows and pulls to the play side, creating an outside running lane with numbers advantage. The bunch alignment forces the defense to declare its edge support and box count before the snap, and pulling linemen kick out the first defender off the edge while the play side TE and WR crack down inside. The primary read progression is not a route tree since this is a run design, so the read is the play side edge defender and the flow of the second level linebackers, bounce outside if the edge is sealed and the alley is clear, cut it up inside the kick block if the corner or safety fills too fast.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side defensive end or outside linebacker at the snap, if he squeezes inside too far the toss bounces outside easily for a big gain. Key the flow of the middle and play side linebackers, if they overpursue to the call side the cutback lane opens up behind the kick out block. Identify the corner or safety alignment on the bunch side pre-snap, an overly aggressive crash from depth signals man coverage or run blitz intent and leaves the alley exposed. Nano blitzes and edge run blitzes from a user controlled defender can blow this up quickly, so respect a defender lined up wide with no run fit responsibility shown pre-snap. Base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with disciplined edge setters and a scraping linebacker tend to shut this down, since the toss relies on the defense overcommitting to the flow.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box against 12 personnel this toss gets risky so consider checking to a pass instead.

Look at how the defense aligns to the Bunch set, if the play side corner or safety crashes down hard on the bunch you have a numbers edge to attack outside.

Use motion or a hard count to see if linebackers are flowing aggressively to the call side, which tells you whether to bounce or stick it up inside the kick out block.

Save this for early down and manageable distance situations like first and ten or second and short, since a blown edge block against fast flow linebackers can lose yardage in a hurry.
