HB Slash out of Singleback Bunch Ace is a power run design with a bunch set to one side (3 tight ends/receivers stacked) and a lone receiver split away. The diagram shows the HB aligned in the backfield taking a hard downhill angle off tackle behind a power blocking scheme, pulling a guard or fullback-type blocker to seal the edge. This is a base run play, not a pass concept, so the primary read is the playside double team and puller: press the hole off tackle and cut off the lead blocker's path based on how the defensive end and linebacker flow to the point of attack.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and linebacker alignment near the bunch, a walked up safety or extra defender to that side signals run support and a possible edge-set that HB Slash can exploit on the backside. Watch for a 3-4 look with two inside linebackers stacked tight, this often clogs the off tackle lane and forces a cutback read. Post-snap, key the playside defensive end, if he crashes hard down the line the pulling blocker should kick him out and open the alley. User-controlled linebackers flying downhill to fill the A or B gap are the biggest threat, patience on the cut is essential to avoid running into a filled hole. Overloaded fronts or a nano blitz off the edge can blow this play up before the puller gets there, so recognize a cheese blitz alignment pre-snap and consider checking to a quick pass instead.
Usage Tips
Check the box count pre-snap and only run HB Slash into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle area.
Use the bunch alignment to bait linebackers into flowing toward the trips side, then hit the off tackle hole away from that flow.
Pair this play with HB Slash Fk End Arnd or End Around Lead from the same set to keep defenders honest on the edge and punish overpursuit.
On early downs against base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts, trust the power blocking scheme and let the pulling blocker set the edge before making your cut.
Avoid calling this into heavy blitz looks with stacked linebackers, instead sequence into a play-action shot like PA Fork Shot to keep the defense guessing.
