Crack Toss is a run play out of Singleback Bunch Ace with 12 personnel that sends the HB in motion toward the bunch side before the snap and tosses him the ball to the outside edge. The bunch alignment gives the frontside receivers and TE crack blocking angles on the second level, clearing out flowing linebackers and corners so the HB can bounce outside or cut upfield depending on the edge leverage. This is a pure run play designed to attack the perimeter, and the primary read is the HB reading the crack blocks off the bunch to decide between bouncing wide or cutting inside the alley defender.

Defensive Reads

Watch for overhang defenders or slot corners cheating inside pre-snap, since that alignment kills the crack angle and forces the HB to cut back immediately. Fast flowing linebackers who diagnose toss quickly and flow hard outside will beat this play unless the crack blocks connect cleanly on the second level. Zone shells with a hard flowing safety to the play side can clog the alley, so look for user-controlled defenders spying the edge before the snap. Man coverage with the corner playing outside leverage on the bunch receivers is the easiest shell to crack block, since the blockers get a clean angle on the alley defender. Heavy blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge can beat this play before the crack blocks set up, so check for overloaded fronts before calling it.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion out of the bunch to identify if the defense shifts or rotates a defender toward the strength, which tells you if the crack blocks will have a clean angle.

Run this on early downs or short yardage when defenses are keying pass tendencies out of Bunch Ace, since the formation often bait zone or man coverage looks.

If the defense shows heavy edge pressure or a fast flowing linebacker crew, hot route the backside TE to chip and slow down backside pursuit before the toss develops.

Pair Crack Toss with Over HB Toss and HB Slash from the same set so defenses cannot sit on one toss direction, keeping linebackers honest on flow.

Sequence Crack Toss with PA Boot Corner Post or PA Fork Shot later in a series, since the aggressive crack blocks and outside toss action sell the play fake hard on the perimeter.
