Breakdown

Seattle is a four verticals concept out of Singleback Bunch Ace with 12 personnel, built to stretch the field on play action. From the bunch, the outside receiver runs a go route up the numbers while the two inside bunch receivers run a corner and a seam that breaks outside into a flood look on the right side, and the backside X runs a vertical go route up the opposite sideline. The HB fakes the handoff and leaks out as a checkdown option underneath. Primary read progression starts with the seam or corner combo to the play side, then works to the backside go route if the safety rotates away, with the HB check down as the last resort against pressure.

Defensive Reads

Check the free safety depth before the snap, if he is shaded to one side the backside go route is likely open against split safety shells. Watch the flat defender to the bunch side, if he sinks with the corner route the underneath seam window opens up for an easy completion. Identify blitz packages immediately since the play action fake will not hold extra rushers and the HB release becomes the emergency valve. Against Cover 3, key the middle of field safety, if he bites on the play fake the seam route behind him is the highest value throw. Beware Cover 4 or quarters shells with disciplined corners who can run with verticals, this coverage forces you into the underdneath HB checkdown for minimal gain.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety pre snap since Seattle punishes any Cover 3 or Cover 1 shell with four vertical stems stacking the coverage vertically.

Use the play action fake to hold linebackers and slow down underneath zone drops, then attack the seam window before the safety can rotate over the top.

On third and long or two minute situations this is a great shot play call because it forces defenders to defend the entire width and depth of the field at once.

If the defense shows Cover 2, hot route the backside go into a deep out or comeback to attack the corner sitting on the flat and take away the safety help over the top.

Pair Seattle with a quick game concept like Stick or Z Spot earlier in the drive so the defense respects the shorter routes, then hit Seattle off that same look to catch safeties creeping up.
