Smash Return is a Cover 2 beater built out of Shotgun Y Off Trio Close with 11 personnel and pre-snap motion. The diagram shows the outside receiver running a corner route to the deep third, an underneath receiver settling in on a hitch or smash route to occupy the flat defender, and the motion man working a return route back across the formation underneath as a check-down and man beater against trailing defenders. On the backside, the tight end runs a shallow crosser (drawn in red) to hold linebackers and clear space for the return route, while the offensive line sets in a standard pass protection to give the quarterback a full progression read. The primary read is high-low on the corner: the QB reads the deep corner route first against the safety, then works down to the smash route sitting underneath, and finally checks the return route as the outlet if both are covered.
Pre-snap, identify the safety alignment: a single high safety suggests Cover 3 or Cover 1, which puts more pressure on the return route and shallow crosser rather than the corner. Watch the corner over the outside receiver at the snap, if he sinks deep with the corner route it signals zone coverage and the smash route underneath should be open. Key the flat defender or curl-to-flat linebacker, if he widens to the smash route the return route working underneath becomes the window to attack. Man coverage is exposed when the defender trailing the motion man gets picked off by the tight end's crossing route, so user linebackers need to stay disciplined and not chase motion blindly. This play is shut down by aggressive Cover 2 corners who jump the smash route combined with a safety who reads the corner route and closes fast, so disguised two-high shells with press corners are the best defensive answer.
Use pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation it is man coverage and the return route becomes a schemed pick against trailing defenders.
Attack Cover 2 shells by throwing the corner route on time before the safety can rotate over the top, since the smash concept is designed to stretch the flat defender vertically and horizontally.
Use this on third and short to medium situations where the smash route and return route give the QB two quick underneath answers if the corner is not open.
Pair this play with Mtn PA X Over or Mtn PA Cross Switch in the same set to keep defenses honest with play-action after establishing the quick game with Smash Return.
If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4, prioritize the return route since it settles into the vacated middle zone away from deep defenders.
