Breakdown

Mtn Y-Corner Z-Choice is a play-action style dropback pass out of Shotgun Y Off Trio Close that uses pre-snap motion to shift the formation before the snap. The Y tight end runs a corner route to attack the sideline and stretch the deep coverage, while the Z receiver runs a choice (option) route working underneath to settle into soft zone or break off man leverage. A shallow crosser and a wide out route round out the concept, giving the quarterback both a vertical shot and a quick underneath answer, making this an effective man and zone beater depending on the coverage shell shown.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the corner over the Y receiver's split. If he presses with no deep safety help rotated over the top, the Y-Corner route can win outside for a chunk gain, so bail him off and pattern match. Identify the deep middle safety before the snap. If he stays hooked in the middle of the field with no rotation, that indicates two-high or split safety zone, which lets Z-Choice sit down in the soft spot for the underneath conversion. Watch the flat defender on the motion side. If a linebacker or slot corner runs with the motion man into the flat, that confirms man coverage and opens the crossing shallow route behind him. Track the backside linebacker depth on the far out route. A shallow-dropping linebacker who widens with the out route leaves the middle of the field vulnerable to the choice route settling behind him. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender flying downhill on the corner route. If the user commits to jumping the corner route, the choice route sitting down underneath becomes the immediate answer for the quarterback.

Usage Tips

Use motion pre-snap to diagnose man versus zone coverage before the ball is snapped, since a defender running across the formation with the motion man confirms man to man.", "Target the Z-Choice route as your first read against zone shells where the receiver can settle into the soft spot between underneath and deep defenders for a reliable conversion on third down.", "Attack the corner route on the Y tight end against single-high safety looks or when the corner is playing press with no deep help, since it creates a natural void in the deep quarter.", "Pair this play with Mtn Slot Choice or Mtn PA Cross Switch in your play-calling sequence to keep the defense guessing between option routes and true play-action shots off similar formation and motion looks.", "Best called on second or third and medium when you need a coverage-beating concept that adjusts route depth in real time based on the defender's leverage, giving your quarterback a high-percentage answer regardless of shell."
