Post-snap, the Y runs a corner route breaking outside off the numbers, the Z on the far side works a choice route that can settle or break vertical based on coverage leverage, and the backside receiver runs a deep crossing route flattening across the field while the X clears out on a short outside route underneath. Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, watch the motion defender, if a linebacker or safety shadows the Y across the formation it signals man coverage and the corner route wins quickly. Identify single high safety alignment, this play is designed to exploit the space behind underneath defenders and in front of a lone deep safety on the corner route. Post-snap, key the flow of the underneath zone defenders on the crosser side, if they sink too fast the crossing route settles into the vacated window. Watch for a user lurk defender sitting in the intermediate middle zone, this can jump the choice route or crosser if the quarterback holds the ball too long. This play struggles against aggressive Cover 3 sky or Cover 2 man concepts with disciplined corners jamming the choice route release, since it disrupts the option read timing.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the Y across the formation it confirms man coverage and the corner route becomes an even stronger first read.

Against single high safety shells, prioritize the Y corner route since it attacks the void behind the cornerback and in front of the deep safety.

If you see two high safeties or Cover 4 quarters, hot route the Z choice route to sit down and settle in the zone hole rather than pushing vertical, this keeps the route as an effective zone beater.

Pair this play with Mtn Slot Choice or Mtn Mesh Rail in the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick option routes and deeper corner shots, forcing linebackers to respect multiple route depths.

Use this on second and medium or third and long situations where the corner route and crosser combo can stretch zones horizontally and vertically at the same time.
