Breakdown

Mtn PA X Over is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Y Off Trio Close that uses run action to hold the linebackers before attacking the middle of the field. Off the fake, the X receiver runs a deep over route across the field from the backside, the TE releases vertically up the seam, and the outside receiver on the play side runs a deep out breaking toward the sideline, while the HB releases late into a flat/swing route as the checkdown after chipping. This is a man beater built to exploit crossing traffic and create natural rubs, with the primary read progression going from the vertical seam route first, to the deep X over crossing the field, and finally down to the HB in the flat if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, since a linebacker who bites hard on the run fake leaves the seam and over route wide open against man or zone. Identify single high safety looks pre-snap, which often signal man coverage underneath and make the X over route a strong first read against man defenders trapped in traffic. Track any user-controlled defender flowing toward the play-action fake, since that lurk player vacating the middle zone opens a throwing lane for the over route. Against two high shells, key the flat defender and outside cornerback leverage, since a soft corner or late-rotating safety will struggle to cover both the deep out and the seam route. Beware of disciplined linebackers who stay in their zone drops without biting on the fake, since this can clog the crossing lane and force the checkdown to the HB in the flat.

Usage Tips

Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap such as corners playing tight press or safeties showing single high, since the X over route creates natural separation against man defenders trying to fight through traffic.

Use the play-action fake early in the down to freeze linebackers, then work your eyes to the vertical seam route first since it stresses the deep middle before the safety can rotate over.

If the defense shows two high safeties or soft zone, hold the seam route as a hot key and target the X over route once it clears the linebacker level, since it beats zone drops that widen with flow.

Pair this play with Mtn Inside Zone or Mtn Duo earlier in the sequence to sell the run fake and get linebackers stepping up, which opens up the play-action window on this call.

Best used on second and medium or third and long situations where defenses are more willing to sit in zone or blitz, since the deep out and flat route give you answers versus both man pressure and zone drops.
