Bounce Inside Zone

Breakdown

Bounce Inside Zone is a run play out of Shotgun Y Off Trio Close designed to attack the edges of the defensive front by bouncing the inside zone blocking scheme outside if the interior gets clogged. The offensive line steps in unison toward the play side, working combo blocks at the point of attack while the running back reads his blocking flow from front side to backside before deciding to bounce it outside the tackle box. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the inside lane first, then bounce to the perimeter if defensive linemen or linebackers overcommit inside.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebackers keying hard downhill immediately after the snap, since overaggressive fills to the inside zone action are exactly what the bounce is designed to exploit. Identify the alignment of the play side defensive end or edge defender, because a wide nine technique or crashing edge can close the bounce lane before it develops. Look for safety rotation into the box pre-snap, as an eight man front with both safeties near the line of scrimmage signals a run blitz that can beat this play if not adjusted with a hot route or audible. Check for user-controlled linebackers spying or flowing hard to the play side, since a smart user defender can sit on the bounce lane and blow up the running back before he gets to the edge. This play struggles against contain-conscious defenses that keep the edge defender squeezed and unblocked, so if the defense consistently sets a hard edge, consider going back to a straight Inside Zone or Mtn Inside Zone to attack the middle instead.

Usage Tips

Use this play against defensive fronts that show heavy interior alignment or stacked boxes, since the bounce design punishes linebackers who crash down too fast on the inside zone action.

Pre-snap, check the box count and identify if the defense has committed a safety into the run fit, since a light box with only six or seven defenders is the ideal trigger to call this.

Hot route the fullback or extra blocker if the defense shows a run blitz look, and consider motioning the H-back or slot receiver to get a free read on man versus zone coverage before the snap.

Pair this with Inside Zone and Mtn Inside Zone earlier in a series to condition the defense to fit tight to the interior gaps, then hit them with the bounce action to gash them on the perimeter.

Best called on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when you want to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest against both inside and outside run gaps.
