Breakdown

Inside Zone out of the Y Off Trio Close set in Shotgun 11 personnel is a standard zone run play, not a play-action or RPO look. The offensive line steps in unison to the play side, reading the defensive front and cutting to the first available crease based on flow, while the H-back and TE work combo blocks to displace second level defenders. The primary read progression is the running back keying the frontside double team, then reading the play side linebacker fill to decide between a bang, bend, or bounce path.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, stacked or crashing linebackers signal a run blitz that can blow up the frontside cutback lane. Identify if the defense is in a one high shell versus two high, since one high safety alignments often mean an extra run defender near the box. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and 3-technique, if they get washed down by the double team the cutback lane opens for a big gain. User controlled defenders flying downhill from depth are the biggest threat to this play, so be ready to bounce outside if you see a linebacker crashing the mesh point. This run struggles against gap exchange or scrape exchange defenses that specifically account for cutback lanes, so avoid calling it into fronts that show heavy inside stunts.

Usage Tips

Run this out of a pass heavy personnel look to keep base or nickel defenses honest since the Trio Close alignment disguises run intent well.

Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box consider bailing to a quick game concept from this same set like Quick HB Mtn Spacing.

Use manual motion or a hot route to adjust the TE block assignment against odd fronts or bear looks that stack extra defenders inside.

Pair this with Bounce Inside Zone and Mtn Inside Zone in your play calling sequence so linebackers cannot sit on one landmark, forcing them to respect both the bend and bounce paths.

On second and short or first and ten, this is a great tempo play to control the clock, and it sets up Mtn Duo later in a series once defenders start flowing hard to one side.
