Mtn Slot Choice out of Shotgun Y Off Trio Close is a five-man route concept built around an option route from the inside slot receiver. Pre-snap motion brings a receiver across the formation into a stack look, and at the snap the outside receiver on that side runs a deep vertical clear-out while the motion man breaks into a corner-flat route toward the sideline. The inside slot runs the choice route (the check-release option based on leverage) sitting underneath, while the backside receiver runs a flat crossing route to the opposite hash. The primary read starts with the choice route reading the defender's leverage, then progresses to the corner route working behind it if the underneath defender jumps the choice, with the deep vertical serving as the alert against man coverage.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and corner alignment on the motion side, since a corner staying home in press indicates man coverage that the choice route can exploit. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled defender flying downhill on the choice route break, which signals aggressive man technique and opens the corner route behind it. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells, the flat defender and underneath hook defender will squeeze the choice route, so look for the corner route sitting in the vacated zone. Blitz-heavy defenses that bring extra rushers off the edge can beat this play before the choice route develops, so check protection and be ready to hot route the backside crosser into a quick outlet. Cover 2 shells with a hard-corner jamming the choice route at the line can disrupt timing, making the deep vertical clear-out route the better alert read in that situation.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing man or zone before using motion, since the choice route reads leverage and needs the defender to declare inside or outside.
Use the motion to draw out the coverage: if a defender follows the motion man across the formation, that confirms man coverage and you should key the choice route to break away from leverage immediately.
Against zone shells, hold the ball a beat longer and let the corner route clear out the flat defender so the choice route settles into the soft spot underneath.
This play works best on second and medium or third and short to medium since the choice route gives you a built-in answer versus most coverages.
Pair this with Mtn Mesh Flat or Mtn RPO Alert Swing earlier in a drive so the defense respects the quick underneath game, then hit this choice concept to expose overaggressive linebackers jumping short routes.
