Breakdown

Mtn Out Deep Corner lines up out of Shotgun Y Off Trio Close with 11 personnel and uses pre-snap motion to shift the receiver alignment before the snap. At the snap the outside receiver runs a deep corner route, the tight end pushes vertically before breaking outside on a deep corner-out combo, the inside slot receiver runs a quick out to the flat, and the motioned receiver clears out on a shallow crossing route underneath. The concept is a man beater designed to stress a single defender in the flat with the double corner routes stacking on top of the shallow crosser, and the primary read progression starts with the outside deep corner route before working down to the TE corner and finally the underneath out and shallow crosser.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment since a single high safety struggles to cover both deep corner routes on the same side of the field. Watch the cornerback over the motion receiver, if he trails across the formation it confirms man coverage and the shallow cross becomes an easy conversion. Post-snap, key the flat defender or nickel corner reaction to the underneath out route, a slow reaction opens an easy completion before the safety can rotate over. This play struggles against two-high shells with aggressive corner jams, since the deep corner routes get disrupted at the line and lose timing versus the quarterback's first read. Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in the deep half or lurking in the middle of the field, as he can jump the TE's corner route if the quarterback stares it down too long.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, since a defender following the motion man across the formation confirms man coverage and opens up the shallow crosser as a hot read.

Attack single high safety shells with the outside deep corner route since it stretches the boundary corner vertically before he can get help over the top.

Against zone coverage, hot route the underneath out to a quick hitch or speed out to beat off-man corners who sink into their zone drop too early.

Best called on second and long or third and medium situations where the defense is more likely to play zone shells, giving the shallow cross and flat out easy completion windows.

Pair this play with Mtn PA X Over or Mtn Mesh Rail earlier in a drive so defenders start biting on shallow crossing action, then hit the deep corner routes for explosive gains once linebackers cheat underneath.
