Counter Y out of Shotgun Y Off Trio Close is a gap scheme run play built around counter action with a puller kicking out the edge defender. The diagram shows the offensive line stepping toward the play call side while the fullback or guard pulls across the formation to lead through the hole, with the running back taking a counter step away from the flow before pressing back downhill. This is a power run play designed to attack B gap or C gap opposite the initial line flow, and the primary read is to press the hole, follow the puller through traffic and cut off the block based on how the second level fills.
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, stacked or heavy box linebackers who bite hard on counter action can be exploited if a user defender does not disciplined fit the puller. Identify whether the edge defender is boxed or crashing inside, since Counter Y depends on that puller kicking out a defender who holds the edge rather than one who is already inside the tackle box. Beware of a user spy or linebacker sitting in the counter gap, this is the primary way to blow up the play since the cutback lane disappears if that defender does not flow with the fake. Look for a safety rotating down into the box on the play side, since an extra run defender at the second level can beat the numbers advantage the counter blocking scheme is designed to create. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra hole defender is where this run hits hardest, but a well timed inside blitz or A gap shoot can beat the counter before the puller gets set.
Run Counter Y on early downs when the defense shows a light box or single high safety since the counter action punishes overaggressive linebacker flow.
Use the deceptive counter step to freeze linebackers who key the backfield, then trust your puller and let the hole develop instead of juking too early.
Pair this call with Inside Zone and Mtn Duo from the same set so defenses cannot sit on gap scheme tendencies, forcing linebackers to respect both zone and counter action.
Check the defensive front pre-snap for a bubble or crashed edge, since a wide 9 technique or crashing end can disrupt the kickout block before the puller arrives.
Use this on second and short or first down to stay ahead of the chains, and mix in Bounce Inside Zone as a changeup if defenses start crowding the counter run lane.
