Mtn X-Dig Slot Corner runs from Shotgun Y Off Trio Close with a pre-snap jet motion from the backside receiver across the formation, drawing the defense horizontally before the snap. The X receiver runs a deep dig across the middle of the field while the slot receiver releases vertically then breaks outside on a corner route, and the motion man clears out underneath to the opposite flat. This is a man beater built off the corner route winning outside leverage and the dig sitting down in the void behind underneath zone defenders, with the primary read starting on the slot corner route against man coverage and progressing to the deep dig if the corner is taken away.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, key the safety alignment since a single high safety struggles to cover both the corner route and the dig if the underneath linebackers get pulled by the motion. Watch for a cornerback sinking with the slot receiver on the corner route release, which signals zone coverage and should push your read directly to the dig sitting in the intermediate window. Post-snap, track any user lurk defender dropping into the middle third since that defender can jump the dig route and turn it into a turnover if the quarterback throws it late. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can undercut the corner route, so recognize a defender sitting outside the numbers pre-snap as a sign this route may be taken away. Man coverage with an overaggressive underneath blitz opens the dig route immediately since the vacated middle zone gives the quarterback a clean throwing lane before the corner route even develops.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap since a defender running with the motion man confirms man coverage and opens up the slot corner route as your first read.
Look to attack single high safety shells where the corner route can climb into the void behind the cornerback while the safety is occupied with the dig or deep routes.
Hot route the motion man into a quick out or hitch on obvious blitz downs to give yourself a checkdown against pressure looks.
Pair this play with Mtn Mesh Rail or Mtn PA Cross Switch in the same set so defenders start keying underneath crossers, then hit them with the corner route shot off similar formation and motion.
Best called on second and medium to third and long when you need a defined high low read between the corner and dig against zone coverage.
