Breakdown

Mtn Mesh Rail is a Shotgun man beater out of Y Off Trio Close that pairs a classic mesh concept underneath with two vertical rail routes on the outside. The two inside receivers cross at a shallow depth to create natural rubs against man coverage while the outside receiver and the tight end (or attached slot) both climb up the sideline on rail routes to stack the corners deep. Your primary read progression starts with the mesh crossers to pick up any man-to-man leverage and pick, then works to the rail route away from the mesh concept if a coverage bust or matchup advantage opens deep down the field.

Defensive Reads

Key the cornerbacks pre-snap, if they are in press man alignment expect the mesh crossers to win easily against off-ball leverage. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers who chase the mesh crossers flat footed open up easy completions underneath. Identify any late safety rotation, a single high safety shell with man coverage underneath is the shell this play is designed to exploit. Zone coverage with a hard flat defender sitting on the mesh crossers can disrupt the timing, look for a sitting zone defender jumping the shallow crosser as a sign to check to the rail route. Watch for user lurk defenders sitting in the mesh window, a smart defender manually sitting on the crossing routes can bait a turnover if the quarterback stares down the mesh combo too long.

Usage Tips

Use this play against known man coverage teams or when you see press alignment pre-snap since the mesh crossers are designed to rub off defenders in man.

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties rotate down late it usually signals man under with a possible blitz, which favors your mesh read.

Hot route the shallow mesh runner to a slight hook or throw the mesh combo into a natural pick rhythm timing throw if you see linebackers sitting in underneath zone.

Pair this call with Mtn Mesh Z Rail or Mtn PA X Over on early downs to keep the defense guessing between mesh crossers and vertical shots off similar formation and motion.

Best used on second and medium to second and long where the offense can take a shot on the rail route if the mesh is covered, since the deep routes take time to develop.
