Breakdown
Shock is a play-action rollout concept out of Shotgun U Off Trips with 12 personnel. The backside X runs a deep vertical from the two-man stack, the trips side X releases outside and bends into a corner route, while the middle trips receiver runs a quick out that sits underneath, and the flat route from the bottom of the trips bunch wheels around to the sideline off the play-action fake. The QB rolls out behind a red run-fake alert arrow, giving a moving pocket with a deep shot, an intermediate breaking route, and a wheel as a checkdown. Primary read progression goes deep corner first, then the underneath out, then the wheel route in the flat as the roll-out outlet.
Defensive Reads
Watch for single high safety alignment pre-snap, since that usually means man coverage underneath and opens up the deep corner route against a cornerback without safety help over the top. If you see two deep safeties split evenly, the wheel route becomes the better answer against zone drops since a linebacker will struggle to carry it out of the backfield. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can disrupt the QB rollout timing, so watch for overload blitzes to the play side pre-snap based on linebacker depth and DE alignment. Post-snap, track any user-controlled defender sinking into a lurk spot in the intermediate zone, since that threatens the underneath out route and forces the QB to hold the ball longer or check down to the wheel. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can undercut the wheel route, so if the corner sits flat instead of playing deep thirds, expect that route to be jumped.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or in play-action heavy sequences when the defense has bitten on your inside zone or HB Power runs from this same formation, since the run-fake sells better and linebackers step up. Check the corner and safety depth before the snap. If you see two deep safeties in a shell, work the wheel route out of the backfield since it should beat a linebacker in man or zone drop. If the corner is playing tight man on the trips side, hot route the middle out to a slant or speed out to create quicker separation against aggressive press. Pair this play in your call sheet with PA Jet Sweep or HB Sweep to keep the defense honest on the perimeter fakes before hitting them with Shock's rollout shot play. Best used on second and medium or first down when defenses are more likely to sell out on run support and vacate the deep half.
