Breakdown

Shock is a trips-based passing concept out of Shotgun U Off Trips with a 12 personnel grouping, and it features a deep vertical, a corner route, a delayed flat/wheel route, and a QB spy or draw check-down up the middle. To the trips side, the outside receiver runs a deep vertical while the inner slot cuts on a sharp corner route, stacking the outside coverage and creating a natural high-low read on the boundary defenders. On the backside, the single receiver releases underneath into a wide flat/wheel route that develops late, giving the QB a check-down option against zone drops while the deep routes clear out man coverage. The primary read progression starts with the vertical shot to the corner route combo on the trips side, then works back to the flat/wheel release if the defense sits deep or shows a two-high shell.

Defensive Reads

Check the middle linebacker depth at the snap, since a shallow drop signals zone coverage and opens the window behind him for the corner route. Watch the free safety rotation after the snap. If he bites hard on the vertical route, the corner route sitting behind him should be open immediately. Identify press man coverage on the outside corner pre-snap. Press coverage struggles against the double move nature of the corner route stacked behind the vertical. Look for a nano blitz or overload blitz from the trips side. If the offensive line cannot account for extra rushers, get the ball out quickly to the flat/wheel route. Beware of a Cover 3 shell with a hard-flowing cornerback to the flat, since that defender can undercut the wheel route if the QB holds the ball too long.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone, since the trips alignment often forces a rotation you can exploit before the snap.

If you see a single high safety, attack the corner route first since the deep vertical will hold the safety and open a natural window underneath it.

Against two-high shells, work the flat/wheel route on the backside since the vertical routes on the trips side will occupy both safeties.

Pair this play with PA Jet Cross or PA Jet Sweep in the same set to keep linebackers honest on run fits before hitting this deeper shot play.

Best used on second or third and medium to long since the routes take time to develop and need a clean pocket for the vertical shot to hit.

Hot route the flat/wheel receiver into a quick out if you are facing a jet sweep look defense, since man corners will often bite on the shorter route first.
