PA Jet Sweep out of Shotgun U Off Trips is a play-action shot play that sells the jet sweep fake before releasing three verticals off the trips side and a deep out from the backside receiver. The play fakes the sweep motion to hold the linebackers and safeties, then attacks downfield with a go route from the outer trips receiver, a deep corner breaking route from the middle trips receiver, and a quick out and up from the inline receiver that stems outside. The backside receiver runs a shallow crossing route that clears underneath, giving the QB a low, safe checkdown option if the deep shots are covered. This is a man beater at its core, designed to isolate the corner route runner against safety help while the jet action manipulates linebacker eyes.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense shows two deep safeties or a single high look, since a single high safety cannot cover both the corner route and the go route on the trips side. Watch linebacker depth at the snap. If they crash hard on the jet motion, the play action window opens up immediately for the corner and vertical routes. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the corner route breaking away from the defender's outside leverage. Zone coverage that keeps underneath defenders sitting instead of biting on the fake will take away the shallow crosser and force the QB into a longer developing throw. Watch for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow crossing lane, since that is the layup throw defenders will try to jump if they recognize the play action concept.
Usage Tips
Use jet motion pre-snap to bait linebackers into flowing with the sweep action, then look immediately to the corner route breaking away from the safety rotation.
This play works best on early downs or in play-action friendly counts like second and short, since the run fake needs defenders to respect the sweep threat.
If the safety bites hard on the play fake, throw the deep corner route for an explosive gain before the underneath crosser even opens up.
Pair this play with actual Jet Sweep and HB Sweep from the same set so the defense has to respect the outside run threat every time you show this personnel and motion.
Against zone shells, work the shallow crosser as your primary read since it settles into soft spots vacated by underneath defenders chasing the fake.
