Mtn Curls Y Corner

Breakdown

Mtn Curls Y Corner is a trips-based passing concept out of Shotgun 12 personnel designed to attack zone coverage with curls sitting underneath and a Y corner route stretching the deep outside third. The trips side runs a curl and flat combo to hold linebackers and underneath defenders while the Y (TE) breaks to the corner behind those routes, creating a natural high low read against zone shells. Your primary progression starts with the Y corner route against single high safety looks, then works down to the curls if the corner is capped, making this a zone beater first with man beater traits if the Y wins on the corner release.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety pre-snap, this is a green light for the Y corner route since it removes deep help over the top on that side. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard into the curl windows the Y corner should be open behind them for the explosive shot play. Beware of Cover 2 shells with a corner sitting on top of the route, this can jump the Y corner and force you to check down to the curls immediately. User controlled defenders playing lurk in the shallow zone can jump the underneath curl routes, so keep an eye on any manual defender crashing down before committing to the checkdown. Man coverage with a safety rotating over the top can take away the Y corner entirely, in that case look to attack with rub concepts using the trips bunch to free up the intermediate curls.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties rotate late or a single high shell, prioritize the Y corner route since it will have room to work outside the numbers.

Use the curls as your checkdown against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone drops where the corner defender sinks too deep, since the underneath curl sitters will be open in the soft spots.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick option or slant if the defense shows blitz, giving your QB an outlet away from the trips concentration.

Pair this play with PA Jet Cross or PA Jet Sweep in your play-calling sequence to get defenses biting on run action after you have shown Mtn Curls Y Corner a few times, opening up easy explosive plays.

Best used on second and medium to second and long, where defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells and give you access to both levels of the route concept.
