Inside Zone out of Shotgun U Off Trips with 12 personnel is a true zone run play, showing a single back aligned to the QB's side with a trips bunch of receivers and a tight end stack to the play side. The blocking scheme is a zone read blocking track, with linemen flowing laterally to create cutback lanes rather than firing straight downhill. The primary read is the frontside combo block, with the running back keying the play side linebacker and defensive tackle to decide between bending the run outside or cutting it back through the A or B gap.
Defensive Reads
Pre snap, check for a stacked box or an extra linebacker cheating toward the trips side since that signals the defense is selling out to stop the run. Watch the defensive tackle alignment: a shaded nose tackle to the play side can clog the primary rushing lane and force an early cutback read. Post snap, key the play side linebacker's first step, if he flows hard with the zone blocking track the cutback lane behind him opens up immediately. Look for a user controlled defender spying the mesh point or crashing the backfield, which is the main threat to blow up Inside Zone before the back can find the crease. Against a two high shell with light boxes this run hits fast, but against single high or run blitz packages the ball carrier needs to be more patient and trust the cutback.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep the defense honest against your trips formation passing concepts. Check the box count pre snap and if the defense has six or more in the box, consider audibling to a pass instead since Inside Zone loses efficiency against loaded fronts. Use the RB's aiming point at the frontside guard as your visual cue and be ready to manually cut back if you see the backside linebacker flow hard playside. Pair this with RPO Alert Bubble or RPO Read Flat from the same U Off Trips set so the defense has to respect both the run action and the quick game off similar formation looks. Against aggressive user linebackers who crash downhill, hold the cutback lane longer since the backside will often be wide open.
