Breakdown

Blast Rt is an Iso run play out of Shotgun U Off Trips in 12 personnel, designed to hit downhill to the right side of the formation. The blocking scheme pulls a lead blocker (fullback or in-line TE) through the hole to isolate and take on the second level defender, giving the HB a clean read on the first true threat past the line. This is a power gap run, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the hole, key the iso blocker's block, and cut off it based on which way the linebacker flows.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a run-heavy front like 4-3 Normal or 46 Bear, since these alignments crowd the box and can outnumber your blockers on the play side. Watch linebacker depth. Linebackers sitting at 4 to 5 yards off the ball are keying run and will flow fast to the iso block, so be ready to cut back if they overcommit. Man coverage shells with the safety rotated down into the box are the toughest look for Blast Rt because it adds an extra run defender without tipping off zone drops. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled linebacker spying the iso blocker instead of engaging, since this often signals a lurk defender trying to blow up the play at the mesh point. Blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge away from the play side are less dangerous here since the design naturally attacks the interior gap before those defenders arrive.

Usage Tips

Use Blast Rt when the defense shows light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since the iso blocker needs a favorable numbers matchup to spring the run.

Check the depth of the middle linebacker pre-snap. If he is stacked tight to the line expecting run, consider audibling to PA Jet Cross or PA Post Shot from this same set to punish an aggressive front.

Pair Blast Rt with Read Option or Lead Read Option in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the downhill iso and the perimeter option threat from identical formation and personnel.

On short yardage or goal line situations, Blast Rt is a strong go-to since the lead blocker concept holds up well against stacked fronts trying to sell out on the run.

Take the manual iso block with the fullback if the defense brings a blitzer off the edge, since sealing the correct rusher is more valuable than pressing the hole immediately.
